I have never gone for a professional facial at a salon. Yes you heard that right! Sensitive skin and the sheer lethargy of spending time in salons has contributed to me experimenting with various products and finding an AM skincare routine that helps me keep the skin hydrated, clean and glowing! All the below mentioned products have been used by me over the months and work perfectly fine for my skin type (Normal and not acne-prone).
Step 1) Cleanser
If you want fuss-free skin, I cannot stress enough on the use of a cleanser twice a day (AM & PM). It will keep your skin and pores clean, dirt-free, re-store the moisture and also mildly exfoliates. Even for simply removing makeup, I do not rely on the makeup-up removers but a simple double cleanse with a mild cleanser followed with your usual cleanser seals the deal. So I navigate towards these types of cleansers:
- Everyday Cleanser for PM
- Everyday Mild Cleanser for AM
- Exfoliating Cleanser (3 times a week)
For everyday cleansers Innisfree has been my go-to for a couple of years now. The Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam which I am currently using works great for my normal skin type (even though it is highly recommended for oily & combination skin types). It deeply cleanses the pores and leaves the skin feeling refreshed. This K-beauty brand has never disappointed me when it comes to cleansers.
For a morning mild cleanser when your skin doesn’t need all that additional deep cleaning, I use the Bioderma Sensibio Gentle Soothing Micellar Cleansing Foaming Gel which is again great for sensitive skin and leaves the skin feeling clean and supple.
Using an exfoliating cleanser has been such a great addition to skincare. The one that I highly recommend and that I am using is the Bioderma Pigmentbio Foaming Cream Brightening Exfoliating Cleanser which exfoliates perfectly on sensitive skin, leaving behind a smooth appearance and texture. The biggest pro is that on my freckle-prone skin it additionally targets dark spots by reducing the appearance of the current ones and further preventing pigmentation on the skin.
Step 2) Toner
If you feel like your skin is lacking moisture and the natural elasticity is missing, it’s probably because your skin is not receiving enough hydration from your usual skincare. Adding a toner, the one that I am currently using is the Innisfree Green Tea Seed Skin Toner which has made sure that my skin looks dewy and intensely hydrated. It is also infused with amino acids, minerals and oxidants thus creating a strong moisture shield. I use it right after cleansing the face by dabbing it on the skin until absorbed.
Step 3) Serum
Serums actually work on your skin concerns for your issues that take longer to treat such as dark spots, dull skin, acne, wrinkles, chronic dryness etc. One can add a combination of serums to their AM & PM skincare according to their own skin concerns and I an no expert at (Please consult a dermatologist) however I am currently using Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% after doing a patch test on the skin (Please note patch tests are highly recommended for new skincare products). This serum helps in visible reduction in the appearance of blemishes and controls sebum activity. For the PM skincare I also use the Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA which is basically a concentrated serum with purified alpha arbutin and also contains the super popular hyaluronic acid. This serum majorly helps to even out the skin tone and reduces appearance of age spots. The Ordinary brand is not available in India currently but I ordered it via Ubuy.
Step 4) Moisturiser
Everyone loves a good moisturiser to get rid of dry skin, hot/cold air damaging the skin and to protect our skin from sun damage. Using a moisturiser with SPF is a good idea for double protection but the one that I am currently using and absolutely a fan of is the Innisfree Brightening Pore Priming Cream. It is a relatively thick formula but gets absorbed completely within a few seconds and apart from moisturising it delivers two benefits that other moisturisers fail to deliver. First is the reduced visibility of pigmentation and the second is the pore blurring effect.
Step 5) Eye Cream
The under eyes need that extra care and moisture. Period. Dark circles, puffy eyes and wrinkles all can be taken care of by the use an eye cream during the day and a night repair eye cream. Before makeup applying an eye cream for more moisture gives the makeup a smooth base. Innisfree Jeju Orchid Eye Cream for the day and Innisfree Perfect 9 Repair Eye Cream EX for night time routine are consistently performing effective options to look at.
Step 6) Sunscreen
Wearing a sunscreen is an essential addition to your skincare especially if your skin is prone to prolonged sun exposure and if you have actives included in your skin care routine. Sun screen will help protect and shield the skin for the harmful UV rays which are at the peak in summer. It also slows down ageing due to sun damage and certain studies show it prevents cancer. I have been constantly experimenting with finding the right sunscreen and recently landed on one suggested by my Dermatologist Photostable Gold Sunscreen Gel SPF-55 . This sunscreen is so affordable, perfectly matte and rests so well under makeup without a trace of oiliness during the day. Another option which I absolutely love is the Bioderma Photoderm MAX Creme with an SPF of 50+ which offers a high protection from the UV rays and along with it is great for travel and water activities as it is water Resistant. The texture is again invisible and gets completely absorbed.
